Contractors, Abatement and Remediation

First, Let’s Get Definitions out of the way:

Unless you are in the industry terms like Abatement, Remediation, P5, and many others get thrown about with little explanation as to what they mean to you.  Many contractors will offer to fix your construction issue but do not necessarily have the training, equipment, and intent to follow industry standards that is not just important to the final result of your project but to your overall health and safety.  Here are some of the most common terms and what they indicate.

Abatement:  Abatement, i.e. the ending, reduction, or lessening of something, refers to the safe removal of Asbestos or Lead from your building materials.  This is usually done when some type of damage has occurred to the building materials or a remodeling project is being undertaken.

Remediation:  Remediation, i.e. the action of remedying something, in particular of reversing or stopping environmental damage, refers to process taken after substantial water damage has occurred (potentially leading to mold growth but not necessarily)

Second, Identify if your Crew is trained for this:

Mold Remediation and Asbestos/Lead Abatement contractors go through extensive training fortified through real world experience.  Specific industry standards, although not mandatory, are highly encouraged and used by the best companies in the industry.  These standards will help ensure your project gets done correctly and in a timely manner, but not by sacrificing quality of work.
